“everyone is an organizer” – Embedding organizing into apprentice education

Presenter: Warren faust, National Organizer, Sheet Metal Workers union

At this year’s Eastern Regional Apprentice Conference, Warren Faust will address instructors, coordinators, and JATC board members on the critical role training centers play in shaping the future of the labor movement. This presentation will focus on the importance of teaching organizing principles to apprentices as part of their core education.

The session will highlight how collaboration between organizing departments and training centers can empower apprentices with a strong understanding of the labor movement, the value of union membership, and their role in expanding union strength.

Key themes will include the idea that everyone is an organizer, that organized labor benefits all working people, and that the labor movement has always been a vehicle for raising standards across industries, a “rising tide lifts all boats” approach.

By integrating these principles into apprentice training, we ensure that the next generation enters the trade not just with technical skills, but with a clear understanding of the mission, values, and collective power of unionism. The goal is to equip every apprentice with the tools and mindset to be an active advocate for the union from day one.

“Tab Lab Certifications” – Streamlining the process and growing the industry

Presenter: Joe Pickens

This presentation will highlight how TAB (Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing) Lab Certifications can streamline the certification process for apprentices and journeypersons while providing clear pathways to industry growth. Using photos and examples from training centers, Joe will show how simple mock-ups and existing equipment, such as duct systems set up for traverse readings, can be leveraged to create meaningful training opportunities without requiring major investment.

Attendees will learn how familiarizing students with TAB equipment in a controlled training environment builds both competence and confidence before they enter the field. The session will also cover additional certifications offered through ICB and NEMI, outlining how locals can utilize these programs to expand their testing capabilities and strengthen their presence in the industry.

By the end of the session, participants will have a clear understanding of how TAB Lab Certification training not only benefits apprentices but also contributes to workforce development and long-term industry growth.

Policies and your JATC

“The world’s first “smart ladder system”

Presenter: Otto Tech Systems

The Otto Solution Otto Tech Systems has invented and patented a groundbreaking solution using integrated IoT technology and data analytics to address these problems. The Otto system applies proprietary sensor technology to workplace equipment to wirelessly gather objective data on every use to engage workers in avoiding accidents before they occur. We are creating a line of products utilizing this technology, with our first product to market, the world’s first Smart Ladder. Our system consists of:

• the world’s first tech-enabled multifunction ladder (available in 8-foot size)

• A portal with complex data analytics accessible to subscribed stakeholders to review actionable safety and operational data (Note: the data will also be available via API.)

• a mobile app that easily enables digital ladder inspections from a mobile device and further engages the individual worker in the overall culture of safety.
